Metal plaques such as the one pictured here once adorned cement pillars that denoted town boundaries in the 1930s. In some places these pillars can still be seen, but the metal plaques have been removed over the years. These boundary markers were placed throughout the state, with the plaques representing the different towns on either side. This is the only known plaque for Smithfield that has survived.
