     A little background here;

     The portion of the mill that burned was occupied by the Hygenic Fibre Company.  On November 19, 1908, it was reported in the Evening Bulletin the sixteen employees went out on strike.  They and their families were ordered to move from the mill’s tenements because the new mill superintendent stated he would not re-hire the strikers.

     On the night of December 9, 1908, the mill was discovered to be on fire.  The newspaper article relating to the fire did not mention the strike.

     This was the second major fire at this mill.  The first occurred in 1882.  Click here for more info.
