World War II Folkart Rug

This rug was hand-made during WWII, and measures approximately 3 ft. by 6 ft.   The “V” represents “victory”.  The farm scene represents the “victory gardens” and agricultural portion of the war effort.  The aircraft represent the aviation training fields which operated in the state during the war.  (There was the Hillsgrove Army Air Field in Warwick, as well as the Quonset Point Naval Air Station and the Charlestown Navy Auxiliary Air Field.)  The Ships represent the Kiser Shipyard in Providence where Liberty Ships were manufactured to carry goods needed for the war effort.   (Smith-Appleby Museum Collection.)
