Lucy Smith Sampler – 1818

Sampler measures 14 inches by 5.5 inches, and is in poor condition.  It reads: “Lucy Smith of Smithfield her sampler wrought by her AD 1818.  Good manners, grace, and truth, are ornaments of youth.  With early virtue plant thy breast, the specious arts of vice detest.”

This sampler may have been completed by Lucy Smith, born March 27, 1792, daughter of Samuel and Hope.  (Source: Vital records of Rhode Island, 1636 – 1850, by James N. Arnold, 1892.)
